Artist Statement

I am intrigued by the complexity of life with its many dimensions, multiple layers, frequent changes and continual evolution. Full of stories, events, and experiences, I see life as a positive energy that I then translate into color and texture.

My creative process involves recurring development and destruction. Without a preconceived plan, each action informs the next. There is a continual exchange between spontaneous and deliberate moves. The primary theme is an evolution from adversity to optimism. I revive assorted items unified by circumstances of hardship – being worn out, almost destroyed or no longer wanted. During development, these once abandoned items are transformed to emerge as an integral part of each painting.

Ultimately each painting comes to life revealing a sense of lyrical movement ready to add drama to your decor.

EDUCATION

BFA from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA.

In addition, Thyra continually improves her skills taking workshops with many fantastic artists such as John Salminen, Frank Webb, Tom Lynch, Carrie Burns Brown, Skip Lawrence, Carla O’Connor, Katherine Chang Liu, Nicholas Wilton, Mark Eanes and Gabriel Lipper.

Who would have thought that a high school typing class would be so valuable years later? Certainly not me! When my dad insisted that I take it, I pushed back, thinking I would never need to be a secretary. But little did I know that it would become a skill that I would use throughout my life.

Fast forward to my job in the art department of a bubble gum company (let's just say it was a closet in the back of my boss's office), where I had to create marketing materials by typing out copy and gluing it to boards. It was a tedious process, and every mistake meant starting over from scratch.

Now, in the age of social media, I find myself typing out lots of copy for posts and texts. And I can't help but feel grateful that I learned how to type properly all those years ago. I may not have been proficient then, but it's amazing how far those skills have taken me.
